♻️ Battle of the Bravest (and Greenest!): OSU Fraternities Face Off in E-Waste Showdown at AVAY

Updated: Apr 21

Get ready — April 26 is about to be shocking in the best way!

AVAY is partnering with the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at The Ohio State University for a high-energy e-waste recycling competition where friendly rivalries, free food, and environmental impact come together for one awesome day!

🏆 The Challenge: Who Can Collect the Most E-Waste?

Fraternities will compete to collect and drop off the most electronics — from outdated laptops to broken printers — with CASH PRIZES for the top three teams.

Prizes:

🥇 1st Place: $1000

🥈 2nd Place: $500

🥉 3rd Place: $250

Members can also earn points for volunteering, posting on social media, and getting their friends to follow @Avay_llc. While the prize competition is for participating OSU organizations, the public is also encouraged to drop off their e-waste (minus the competition perks). Everyone wins when we recycle!

Four happy people sort electronics into boxes labeled "Wires" in a sunny parking lot, with cars and a brick building in the background.

Point Breakdown:

  • ✅ +50 points: Most e-waste collected

  • 🙋‍♀️ +10 points per volunteer

  • 📲 +5–7 points per social media post

  • 📱 +1 point per new follower on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and LinkedIn

🌍 Why It Matters

E-waste is the fastest-growing solid waste stream in the world. In 2021, the world generated 57.4 million metric tons of e-waste — and only 17.4% of it was formally collected and recycled. (Source: United Nations’ Global E-Waste Monitor)

💡 One recycled laptop can save enough energy to power a home for up to 30 hours.📱 Recycling one million cell phones recovers approximately 35,000 lbs of copper, 772 lbs of silver, 75 lbs of gold, and 33 lbs of palladium. (Source: U.S. EPA)🧪 When improperly disposed of, electronics can release lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can contaminate soil and water.

Recycling your old electronics keeps these harmful materials out of the environment and helps reuse valuable resources.

🇺🇸 E-Waste Drives: A National Trend

E-waste events like this are happening across the country to combat the rising tide of tech trash:

  • Columbia University recycles about 4.5 tons of hazardous or potentially hazardous waste annually, which includes e-waste.

  • The University of Texas and other campuses regularly partner with recyclers for community drop-off events.

  • ASU promotes e-waste recycling through campus-wide sustainability initiatives, including campus-wide collection events and the Blue Bag program, which allows staff and faculty to recycle items like batteries and small e-waste. ASU also works with the Sustainability Consortium to determine the environmental effects of electronic products throughout their lifecycles.

Now it’s OSU’s time to shine — and we want to make this event one of the biggest and greenest in the Midwest!
